Launch of 2017 KTM Duke 390 in India: March 2017
The ever crazy moto market is spoiled for lustful choices in the high end-arena, and thus coming up with a desirable motorcycle for a budget price is a challenging achievement. This small looking KTM Duke 390 packs a far larger punch than its dimensions to put some bigger bikes to shame with its cubic capacity on-road and on-track. It has always entertained us by unequaled balance of style, great performance and budgeted value since its first spin in 2015. It rightfully earned two honors – “Best Entry Level Motorcycle in Annual MOBO Awards” and “Best Lightweight/Entry-Level Motorcycle of 2016”
And now as we speak of its evolution, look out for yourself as the 2017 KTM Duke 390 looks ready to bite your head off!
The new 2017 Duke’s face gets an overhaul from the design department. This bike is Edgy, sharp, much sharp as a chef’s knife, aggressive styling and of course Orange and White. The design all and out roughly mimics its big brother 1290 Super Duke – now incorporating Full LED lighting, very first in its class.
An absolute for the first time in 2017 KTM Duke 390’s class color TFT LCD which is the most talked out feature and is KTM’s newest party trick. Beside this the only other bike where we have a screen like this is the Ducati Multistrada 1200. The console has telltale lights on both sides of the screen and the top right corner sports a light sensor. This sensor helps the display to automatically adapt its illumination to the ambient light with white background during the day which switches to black at night times. Duke 390 has antiglare screen and is legible to read as we ride all the time. The font size on the Speedometer increases as we speed higher. Here we just have the gear indicator and no shift indicator, but instead we have the whole rev counter that flickers to red color as you rev high signaling you to gear upshift. Also the screen has two portions as upper left yellow band for side stand warning and lower left red band for critical errors like sensor failures.
Another bit-a-byte feature on 2017 Duke 390 is MyRide which allows you to connect your smartphone to the console via Bluetooth. Easy to pair after which it shows incoming calls, control music options which can be operated tirelessly and easily on the four-button cluster panel on the left handle.
Engine & Performance
As very expected, the beast 390 delivers. The new 2017 KTM Duke has a 373cc, liquid-cooled, single drive engine is now BS-IV compliant which brings out the exhaust canister that looks pretty awesome. It has added more of a 11kg weight but so has the torque by 2Nm boosted by a larger airbox.
Rest the internals are same with the maximum power output of 43.5PS at 9,000 rpm and peak torque of 37 Nm at 7,000 rpm delivering peak power and torque. A major and welcomed addition is ride-by-wire which ensures perfect application of plentiful torque through smoother throttle response which goes more precise than the absent throttle cable.
This 2017 Duke 390 accelerates like a crazy beast reaching a top speed of 163 kmph on test tracks.
You won’t say a lot more has changed from the previous one but yes some small nudges have come down to make some remarkable comfort and experience. The moment you sit on the new 2017 KTM Duke 390, you feel it sporty naked. It has come up with a new modular split trellis frame which was earlier a single piece unit, this will easily help you afford and fix the part in an event of nasty crash. Frame gets improved ground clearance by 8 mm.
The seat height of 2017 Duke 390 has increased by 15 mm to make space for larger airbox. The seats are shaped wider and longer with more comfort for taller people than ever before. The footpegs have moved further back and you sit more forward than before making the riding position more accommodating and sportier than before.
The fuel tank of 2017 KTM Duke 390 gets an upper margin with 13.5 litres steel tank. The tank now stands more vertical and forward-inclined than before, empowering Duke 390 with more purposeful, aggressive and ready for action stance. Shrouds on sides to fuel tank gives it a sporty look and perfect knee contact for riders with room on the saddle.
Brakes & Tyres
The brakes of 2017 KTM Duke have been upgraded to 320 mm disc at the front with standard ABS that do a handsome job of stopping the bike real quick. The front wheel hubs made bigger to house new bigger disc at front. Duke 390 has even come up with ABS modes – Off, On, and Sup-Mot. It is by default on the On mode. You can switch it off but then it shows error signal (saying illegal) and again switch back to On automatically. However in the Super Moto mode, the real wheel ABS is switched off that protects the rear end step out and dance when braked at high speeds giving you a perfect control while emergency braking.
The new 2017 KTM Duke 390 comes up with the same Metzeler tyres but with a harder compound rubber that promises 30% longer tyre life and more affordable. The front tyre is 110 mm wide and an impressive 150 mm at the rear. These are tested for high grip levels in both dry and wet conditions also providing riders to lean down at sharp curves.
The feature loaded on the new 2017 KTM Duke 390 packs a punch for you with its acceleration, as a Duke always does, and with its sharp edgy styling, sportier stance and robust riding as a race bike enthusiast is always greedy of. This beast rolling down the road gives a tough competition to more pricy big bikes. So you have it all here with Duke 390 for a much fair price. You might shame your biker heart if you miss this upgrade! 😉
