Tata Hexa Full Review
Price of Tata Hexa in India: Range Rs. 11.99 to 17.49 lakh in Delhi (ex-showroom)
Launch of Tata Hexa in India: January 2017
Tata Hexa is the latest flagship offering from Tata. On first glance it might look like a face lifted version of Aria but trust me when I say the changes are considerable and are better than any previous Tata. It is an honest car which has just made Tata leap bounds ahead in terms of quality, design and comfort which it has learnt from managing brands like Land Rover and Jaguar. Hexa is a flagship offering from Tata so you can expect the very best Tata has to offer. With a starting price of INR 11.99 lakh and going up to INR 17.49 lakh ex-showroom, you get varied options to choose from which is I think a very good sales strategy opted by the fellas at Tata to attract even the budget as well as fat wallet buyer.
Cars like Tata Hexa are in a category we like to call the “Big Car Segment” and the main reason anyone buys a big car is to have space, comfort, safety and reliability. Power and looks are an add-on but are secondary with cost coming somewhere in-between. Hexa aces in all of this qualities and is also reasonably priced.
Tata Hexa is available in both automatic and manual transmission. Now the market for automatic transmission cars is booming in India, recently Toyota released a report that 50% of its Innova Crysta sales are of Automatic type so it is only common sense for Tata to give automatic option for its Hexa but there is one issue that cannot be ignored and that is the Hexa weighs a couple of tons’, 2280 kg kerb weight to be exact, 500 kg more than its closest competition Crysta. It wouldn’t have been a problem if the Hexa had an engine designed just for it, but sadly it has the same 2179 cc, 2.2 liter, four-cylinder, turbocharged varicor 400 diesel engine that the Safari Storme uses. Producing a maximum power of 156 bhp at 4000 rpm and peak torque of 400 NM at 1700-2700 rpm which does an OK job with the manual transmission but it leaves a something desirable missing in case of the automatic version. The Tata Hexa is a heavy car and a good car mind it and a more powerful engine is what it deserves. Though the present engine is not that bad, but a more powerful engine would have been better or the car was just lighter.
One more thing that a potential buyer might find irky about Tata Hexa is that All-Wheel drive (AWD) is not available in automatic transmission. A very good percentage of buyers will want an Automatic transmission and AWD with Automatic transmission would have been better. The manual version has both AWD and RWD option while the automatic transmission has just RWD option.
With a 60 liter fuel tank and 17 kmpl economy on highways Tata Hexa also has a great range for touring.
The Tata’s have learned a lot from managing Jaguar and Land Rover and it is evident from Hexa’s great interiors. It has the best interior in any of the Tata’s model till date. Good quality plastics have been used wherever needed. On the front, Tata Hexa has an all-black dashboard with a nice mix of brushed aluminum piano black inserts, smoked chrome and black leather. The seats are made of variable density foam which are 8 way adjustable and offer a great under thigh support and back support and are brilliant to sit on. Also Hexa has a 10 speaker JBL audio system with 320 DSP amplifier and sub-woofer, the infotainment system in the Hexa also has a smartphone integration system which comes quite handy.
Exterior and Comfort
Tata Hexa dimension measures as 4788 mm of length, 1903 mm of width, 1791 mm of height, 2850 mm of wheelbase and 200 mm of ground clearance. Tata Hexa comes in both 6 and 7 seater categories and is very spacious, even the third row has a good or rather “better than Toyota Innova leg room”. The ride quality is excellent on all kinds of roads, though there is a subtle bumpiness there at low speeds and the handling feels a little hard also only on low speeds, which maybe due to the large weight of the car but it is subtle enough to be ignorable and once the car picks up speed it just glides over potholes and rough roads. There are customization kits available to choose from namely – Tuff Kit, Expedition Kit, and the basic Luxe kit. These kits add great functionality and add on to the car like roof platform, waterproof luggage bag, roof box, tire pressure monitoring system, front side and rear skirts, wireless charging tray, shovel puddle lamps etc. Great for long journey with family and friends with lots of luggage.
Safety and Reliability wise Tata Hexa has 6 Airbags, an air bag for every passenger. It has traction control, a Hill Hold descent control system and ABS with Electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and Electronic stability control (ESP). Its 19 inch alloy wheel provides great control and a ground clearance of 200 mm, giving a center of gravity safe enough to get out of any sticky situations without the risk of over-turning the vehicle.
After Tiago, Hexa is the second car from Tata to have the “Impact” design language. Though not that observable in the Tiago, the Hexa nails it in that design language by sheer Road presence and stance, it’s huge. The after sales service being offered by Tata is not that great but it has improved and if the improvement is just like this car then Tata Hexa is a great choice and it even tops the widely accepted Toyota Innova, offering better in every category and is cheaper than Innova.
